My interest started with the animals, I wanted to work with animals since I was very little and I always enjoyed science disciplines at school (though I also enjoyed others and at some point also thought of becoming a writer). I got really fascinated by science when I first started my degree in Biology and was certain then to be in the right place.
I was interested in both science and arts subjects at school, and only got into evolutionary science towards the end of my degree. When I left school I din’t know what I wanted to do, so I just went for the subjects that I enjoyed!
I think like every really little kid I asked “why?” all the time. But I was lucky, my whole family wanted to TELL me. They all bought me science books from before I could even read, lots with pictures of animals and scientists studying them. I knew the books were written by scientists so I wanted to be a scientist. Also, at that time, sometimes scientists got to go into space, and I really wanted to do that. Then when I was five my class had a week about dinosaurs and I decided THAT was the kind of scientist I wanted to be. I asked my dad what a scientist who studied dinosaurs was called and he said “paleontologist” so I learned how to say it. That was my answer to “what do you want to be when you grow up” for years! But later I decided I wanted to be like Jane Goodall and study animals that are actually alive.
