That’s a really good question! It made me laugh when I found out that storm petrels ate dolphin meat. Not that I have anything against dolphins or like to see them being eaten but storm petrels are tiny harmless things that fit in the palm of your hand and the thought of them even daring to attack a dolphin is just hilarious! Because of that we are very certain that they ate bits of an already dead dolphin but it was still fun to imagine the attack. I was also very surprised that they seem to eat lots of butterflies and other insects – these are not birds that you would ever see inland, like you see gulls for instance, so you would expect them to eat only sea food 🙂 It turns out that many many dead insects are actually found on sea surface and are carried by the waters miles and miles away into the deep ocean. And they don’t put much of a fight so it does seem well worth feeding on them!
