Birds evolved from dinosaurs and are thought to be (together with crocodiles) their closest living relatives. There are many fossils suggesting that some dinosaurs already had feathers and other characteristicts that birds have today. One of the most famous fossils in the world is that of a species called Archaeopteryx lithographica, which was the first fossil found that really showed the process of evolution as it seemed to be a complete mixture between a dinosaur and a bird. Nowadays we don’t think that birds actually evolved directly from Archaeopteryx but possibly from another similar species. Penguins and Procellariiformes (albatrosses, shearwaters and storm petrels) are thought to be the oldest living birds on earth.
