Yes, it’s a challenging job — well, parts of it are! Parts of it are just hard work. Also, sometimes something is really clear or easy to me and not to other people, and that’s when I know that I can really make a contribution and help out. But there’s a lot of learning all the time, and some of it is very different than what I studied at school or university, so I have to work hard on trying to understand. But the other thing scientists do is collaborate — that’s when you cooperate on trying to solve a problem with someone who knows different things than you do.
My job is challenging, but that doesn’t stop it from being fun 🙂
I agree with Joanna that how easy it is to understand information is really dependent on who you are working with and how it’s explained. The best ideas in my job tend to come from chatting to others about my work and finding that someone else can explain something I can’t – you can never be an expert in everything! Anything that makes you think about your work in a different way is good in my opinion, and this project is a great example of that.
