When you have to build a robot — build it as well as program it — you understand the problems animals have better. You understand how their bodies contribute to their behaviour, it’s not just their intelligence that determines what they can do. And you understand that one of the hardest things for intelligence to do is to perceive – which means to translate what you sense into concepts you can use to decide what to do next.
