Well, I think getting stuck in a swamp in Costa Rica during a thunderstorm…normally we could walk on these floating reedbeds quite OK, but when the rain started, the reeds we were walking on got heavy and wet with the rain and started to sink and then our feet started getting caught in it. It went from funny to a bit scary when we realised we really could not get out and we were getting tired of trying to free ourselves! Eventually one person managed to pull themselves free and they helped the rest of us…but we did lose a rather expensive piece of equipment!

Yes, I have been in a few particularly dangerous situations, some out of my own complete stupidity and some that were just out of my hands. The one I believe I was closer to dying (and therefore quite terrified) happen when I was doing fieldwork in a small desert island. It was December, I have been on the island with a colleague for a few months in a row and we were both very keen to go home for Christmas. The weather was just terrible for days and days, big waves were crashing all the time in the one place where the boat could come close to the island to get us and the forecast was not promising. One of the days the boatman called to say he had been studying the waves and he thought there was enough of an interval between them for him to approach with the boat, us to jump in, and quickly drive us out of the dangerous zone. The waves were huge, the intervals with no waves were not very big at all and we were already quite scared with the whole idea but he did manage to approach the island, we jumped in and the motor of the boat died and wouldn’t start! It seemed like forever! Somehow, the motor just did it when we could already see the huge wave coming towards us and, as soon we were out of the danger zone, the motor broke completely! We had to row the boat all the way back to the mainland, which took us a coulple of hours, feeling just too happy to be alive!
