Well, I would be extremely surprised if they did not exist!

Given how vastly huge the universe is, and given the fact that are many planets that have earth-like atmospheres out there, then even if it is very rare for live to evolve, I would expect life has evolved on many other planets.

Just because life has evolved, does not mean it has reached the same complexity of life on earth. There will be many many planets that have evolved bacteria-like slime for every one that managed to sustain more complex life (because complex life can only survive in a narrower range of environments). And we cannot be certain of things we’ve never observed – so we cannot be sure!

The only problem is that even if complex alien life does exist, space is so vast. Our current understanding of physics suggests that it would be very very unlikely people will ever be able to travel to planets outside our solar systems as they are so far away….so unless the little green men know stuff about physics we don’t and can therefore travel here to meet us, I don’t think we’ll be making friends any time soon!
