Giraffes are native to most of central and southern Africa. T hey inhabit the woodlands and savannas across this area.

Fossils show that giraffes likely evolved from deer, but no one knows for sure why they evolved such long necks! It now seems that the advantage of a long neck is in fighting rather than feeding from trees. They swing their necks like a ball and chain in fights so they can be lethal!
