• Question: when it a hot day why do we sweat?

      Hiya,

      We sweat because it helps to keep us cool. If you are really hot, you might want to go for a swim, or take a cool shower, or sit in a place with a nice breeze, like in front of a fan. Why? Well for water to evaporate (turn from liquid into gas int he air) it takes energy. This energy is heat, so if you are hot and you put water on your skin as the water evaporates it will cool your skin.

      If there is wind, then the cooling happens even quicker as the water evaporates faster.

      So sweating is your body’s way of releasing water on to your skin to help you cool down…
