I was a good student and I guess I was clever enough but I never thought of myself as “brainy”. I know a few people who I think are “little genius” and I feel I can’t possibly compare to them!

Yeah, I was a total geek if that’s what you’re asking. I thought fiction was boring & read all the science at our local library instead. I even liked history more than fiction. And I sat outside by a nearby pond & watched water bugs a lot.

I think I was quite average really. I was never top of the class, and i never won any prizes in school. I was really bad in some subjects (like I one got 30% in my end of year history exam, which was the lowest in the class!) and good in others.

What matters is if you are interested and enjoy what you do…I am only good at what I do now because I enjoy it so much that I have the motivation to make the effort to learn!

I was probably what you’d describe as brainy, but I don’t think it’s as important to becoming a scientist as a genuine fascination in science and motivation to answer the difficult questions science gives us.

Basically, if you don’t get the results you want in your GCSEs and want to be a scientist, don’t panic! There are other routes into the career, and the way you think is much more important than test scores 🙂
