Yes! It’s hard to judge emotions in animals because we tend to just attribute our own feelings to them, and this is a big issue in animal behaviour studies.
One way of getting at animal emotions is by measuring hormones, and one of my favourite findings in this area is that when we think monkeys look stressed out and do the kinds of things we do when we’re stressed, they have high levels of stress related hormones, so they’re probably feeling something that we can understand 🙂
